AMNIOCENTESIS

AMNIOCENTESIS

You have waited so long for this baby and now you are worried that it might not be as healthy as you would like.

Amniocentesis can be detect a number of birth defects and is justified when:

  • The pregnant woman is 35 year old or more.
  • Someone in the parent’s immediate family has a genetic disorder.
  • There is a family history of hemophilia or spina bifida.
  • An earlier pregnancy produced a baby with chromosome abnormalities.

The test itself presents some risk- there is about 1 chance in 400 that it may produce a miscarriage.
